Grimaldi Group Unveils ‘Grande Shanghai’ A Next-Gen Green Car Carrier

15

The Grimaldi Group has officially named its newest vessel, the Grande Shanghai, at a ceremony held in Jiangsu, China.

This marks the launch of the first of 10 state-of-the-art pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) ordered from China Merchants Heavy Industries, setting new sustainability and capacity standards in maritime transport.

High Capacity and Smart Design

The Grande Shanghai can carry up to 9,000 CEUs (Car Equivalent Units), while the last five ships in the series will be capable of transporting 9,800 CEUs. Built in collaboration with naval architects Knud E. Hansen, the ship stretches 220 meters long with a beam of 38 meters, and cruises at 18 knots. It accommodates both electric and fuel-based vehicles across 14 decks.

Leading in Green Maritime Technology

As the first vessel in Grimaldi’s fleet to earn the Ammonia Ready class notation from RINA, the Grande Shanghai stands out for its eco-conscious design. It has received several green certifications like Green Plus, Green Star 3, and Comfort Noise Port.

Eco features include:

  • 5 MWh mega lithium batteries

  • 2,500 sq. m. of solar panels

  • Cold ironing capability

  • Silicon-based hull coating

  • Smart ventilation/AC systems

  • Exhaust gas and NOx reduction tech

These innovations result in 50% less fuel consumption per cargo unit compared to older vessels.

First PCTC with Gate Rudder Technology

A major innovation is the gate rudder system, the first ever installed on a PCTC. This system—with two foil blades around the propeller—enhances propulsion and maneuverability, further reducing the vessel’s environmental impact.

With its combination of efficiency, capacity, and sustainability, the Grande Shanghai represents a transformative step for the Grimaldi Group and maritime shipping at large.
