On March 7, a tow tug was successful in moving the grounded vessel to a deeper position allowing it to float for further salvage operations.
What happened?
The tow vessel ‘Fairmount Alpine’ managed to pull the grounded vessel ‘Betanzos’ eighty metres from its initial position after it grounded near the Bugio Lighthouse at the Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio in the Oeiras municipality.
Initial efforts unsuccessful
The initial efforts to tow the vessel to a deeper position were unsuccessful due to low tide and so the operations were suspended.
However on March 15, around 02:30 pm, the efforts to tow the vessel were initiated taking advantage of the rising tide and the vessel was slowly moved to a deeper position which enabled it to float.
After the vessel, was refloated it was salvaged and towed to the Lisbon port for further inspection and repair.
