Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI) has secured a contract from COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers to build a 70,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel, reports iMarine News.
Advanced Semi-Submersible
Li Jichun, Chief Accountant of COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers, Zhou Mushun, Chief Engineer of GSI (Guangzhou Shipyard International), Zhang Yan, General Manager of Beijing CSTC (China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd.), and Lu Xinwei, Deputy General Manager of the Third Department of Ship and Marine Business of CSTC, signed a vessel construction contract.
COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers is recognized as a global leader in the transportation of semi-submersible vessels, with over 30 years of experience in this specialized market.
GSI is the first Chinese shipyard capable of constructing advanced semi-submersible vessels. The two companies have collaborated for 20 years, resulting in the delivery of eight semi-submersible vessels, ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 tons.
This partnership has not only overcome foreign technological barriers but has also positioned China as a global leader in the design, construction, and operation of semi-submersible vessels.
Setting Standards
On December 28, 2023, Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) delivered the “Xiangtaikou,” a 65,000 DWT semi-submersible vessel. This vessel is equipped with an advanced dynamic positioning system, an intelligent ship system, and an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust gas treatment system. It combines precise transportation capabilities with intelligent environmental protection features, representing a new generation of semi-submersible vessels from GSI and setting a new standard for advanced vessel development.
Between 2002 and 2021, GSI delivered six semi-submersible vessels. Notably, the 50,000 DWT “Xiang’ankou,” delivered in 2021, was the first Chinese-built semi-submersible vessel equipped with an intelligent ship system. Compared to earlier 50,000 DWT vessels, the “Xiang’ankou” showcased significant improvements in environmental performance, stability, automation, maneuverability, energy efficiency, and loading capacity, driving China’s semi-submersible vessel manufacturing towards greater intelligence.
