GTT, a leading expert in membrane containment systems for transporting and storing liquefied gases, has been awarded an Approval in Principle (AiP) from ABS, a prominent classification society, for the NH3-ready notation of its Mark III containment system on LNG-fueled vessels.
Enhanced Versatility and Sustainability
This approval allows LNG tanks equipped with Mark III technology to be converted for ammonia (NH3) use aboard LNG-fueled vessels. The ability to operate on another fuel in their second life enhances the versatility of these vessels. This AiP underscores GTT’s commitment to developing sustainable and flexible solutions for the maritime industry, enabling shipowners and operators to adapt to evolving environmental regulations and maritime standards.
Statements from GTT and ABS
David Colson, Commercial VP of GTT, expressed pride in receiving the AiP, emphasizing the relevance of the Mark III technology for ammonia-fueled ships following extensive testing. He noted that while ammonia as fuel is still to be proven, this approval advances the possibility of multi-gas conversion on vessels with GTT technologies, reinforcing GTT’s position in sustainable maritime solutions.
Rostom Merzouki, Global Gas Solution Director of ABS, highlighted the alignment of this development with ABS’s commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s transition to alternative fuels. He affirmed the potential of Mark III technology in addressing future energy challenges and expressed pleasure in awarding the AiP to GTT for their practical NH3-Ready Mark III containment system.
