China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) has received an order from South Korea’s Hyundai Glovis to construct six additional LNG dual-fuel Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs), each with a capacity of 10,800 car equivalent units (ceu). The contract, signed in mid-May, makes these the world’s largest PCTCs.

Contract Details

GSI announced the contract on Monday but did not disclose the financial terms or delivery dates for the six vessels. With this order, GSI now has a total of 14 LNG dual-fuel PCTCs in its backlog.

Investment and Fleet Expansion

Hyundai Glovis, a key player in the PCTC market and part of Hyundai Motor Group revealed last month its plans to add six LNG dual-fuel vessels to its fleet, with an investment of $750 million. The company anticipates the delivery of these ships by the end of 2028.

Previous Collaborations and Orders

In December of last year, Hyundai Glovis partnered with South Korea’s HMM to order six LNG-powered PCTCs from GSI. Additionally, Hyundai Glovis and Seaspan placed an order for six LNG-powered PCTCs with CSSC’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS).

In February this year, Hyundai Glovis signed an agreement with the Korea Ocean Business Corporation (KOBC) for the construction of four LNG-powered PCTCs, each with a capacity of 10,800 ceu.SWS and GSI will each build two of these vessels.

Total Fleet Expansion

Including the latest order, Hyundai Glovis will have a total of 22 LNG-powered PCTCs in its fleet, aligning with its goal of expanding its environmentally friendly shipping capabilities.
