  • Hafnia, in partnership with DNV, is piloting a system to monitor and manage underwater radiated noise (URN) on its vessels.
  • The project is operational on the Hafnia Excel and Hafnia Osprey, providing continuous onboard and hydrophone measurements.
  • Data collected will inform a Noise Management Plan, guiding vessel design and noise reduction strategies for sustainability.
  • The initiative positions Hafnia as a leader in proactive environmental stewardship ahead of future regulatory requirements.

Hafnia is advancing its sustainability agenda with a groundbreaking pilot project in collaboration with DNV to monitor and manage Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) from its vessels. This initiative, now operational on the Hafnia Excel, features a permanently installed system that uniquely connects onboard measurements with a vessel’s underwater noise profile. By taking this proactive step, Hafnia is positioning itself at the forefront of environmental stewardship in shipping, according to Hafnia.

The pilot project covers two vessels, the Hafnia Excel and Hafnia Osprey, where state-of-the-art monitoring systems are being installed during drydocking. These systems deliver continuous data on underwater noise, providing insights into how everyday operations affect the marine environment. Complementary measurements using external hydrophones will offer additional reference data. The overarching aim is to develop a Noise Management Plan for Hafnia’s fleet, guiding decisions on noise reduction strategies and informing future vessel design. Through this initiative, Hafnia and DNV are generating critical knowledge to anticipate regulatory changes and implement practical solutions for quieter, more sustainable shipping.
