Hafnia, in collaboration with its joint-venture partner Socatra of France under the partnership name Ecomar, is set to receive the first of four dual-fuel methanol chemical IMOII Medium-Range (MR) vessels. These 49,800 deadweight vessels, constructed at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China, represent a significant advancement in Hafnia’s sustainability journey.
Key Highlights of the Newbuilds
- Delivery Timeline:
- The first vessel will be delivered in January 2025 after successful construction and sea trials.
- Three additional vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2025, with the fourth arriving in 2026.
- Dual-Fuel Capability:
- These vessels can operate on both conventional fuel and methanol, facilitating a smoother transition to green methanol as it becomes widely available.
- Green methanol significantly reduces NOx, SOx, and particulate matter emissions, aligning with Hafnia’s decarbonization goals.
- Innovative Features:
- Fuel Efficiency Enhancements: Shaft generators and Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS), with space reserved for rotor sails.
- Shore Power Ready: Engine room spaces are allocated for high-voltage shore power transformers, contingent on port infrastructure readiness.
- Charter and Partnership:
- The vessels will be time-chartered by TotalEnergies for a multi-year period, further strengthening Ecomar’s partnership with the energy leader.
Commitment to Decarbonization
Hafnia underscores that while these methanol-capable vessels are a significant step toward sustainability, full decarbonization requires a collective effort across the maritime industry. By adopting green fuel technologies and enhancing energy efficiency, Hafnia remains committed to reducing emissions and exploring future innovations for its fleet.
These vessels exemplify a forward-looking approach, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable shipping future.
