  • Hafnia & Socatra receive Ecomar Gascogne, their first dual-fuel methanol MR tanker.
  • First of four from Guangzhou Shipyard, with the rest arriving 2025-2026.
  • All four on long-term charter with TotalEnergies.
  • Dual-fuel capability enables methanol use for decarbonization.
  • Hafnia exploring wind-assisted propulsion & shore power readiness.

Singapore-based Hafnia and its joint venture partner Socatra have received the Ecomar Gascogne, their first dual-fuel methanol IMOII medium-range (MR) tanker. This 49,800 dwt vessel is the first of four such newbuilds ordered from Guangzhou Shipyard International in China, with the remaining three set for delivery in 2025 and 2026. French energy giant TotalEnergies has secured all four vessels under a multi-year charter agreement, according to Offshore Energy.

Advancing Decarbonization Through Dual-Fuel Technology

The introduction of these tankers marks a significant milestone in Hafnia’s decarbonization strategy. By being dual-fuel capable, they can operate on conventional fuel while transitioning to methanol as a lower-emission alternative. The potential to use green methanol in the future aligns with global efforts to reduce the shipping industry’s carbon footprint.

Sustainability Enhancements

Hafnia has been exploring additional environmental innovations for these vessels, including shaft generators and wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS). Space has been allocated for rotor sails to improve efficiency further. The ships will also be prepared for future shore power connections, with designated areas in the engine room reserved for high-voltage transformers, subject to port infrastructure readiness.

Fleet Upgrades with Advanced Tank Coating

In related developments, Hafnia has signed a contract with Ohio-based Advanced Polymer Coatings (APC) to apply its MarineLINE coating system to ten chemical tankers. These vessels, acquired in January 2022, will undergo a tank recoating program to enhance their operational efficiency and durability.

With these new vessels and ongoing fleet upgrades, Hafnia is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable shipping while ensuring long-term efficiency and compliance with evolving environmental regulations.
