Hanwha And GasLog Partner On Ammonia Gas Turbine Retrofit For LNG Carriers

112

According to PR Newswire, Hanwha Power Systems has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with GasLog at Gastech 2024 in Houston to retrofit LNG carriers with eco-friendly ammonia gas turbines, aiming to reduce carbon emissions. This partnership reflects the growing shift toward sustainable marine solutions and is expected to revolutionize ship propulsion systems.

Ammonia Gas Turbine for Eco-Friendly Propulsion

The collaboration between Hanwha Power Systems and GasLog focuses on retrofitting LNG carriers with ammonia gas turbines, which offer a carbon-free propulsion option. Ammonia gas turbines require no pilot oil, unlike traditional engines, and can operate flexibly with a mix of ammonia and natural gas, ensuring compliance with future emission regulations.

Addressing Carbon Emission Challenges

In light of the IMO and EU’s stricter carbon reduction targets, shipowners are searching for alternative propulsion systems. Hanwha’s Ammonia Combustion System, developed by Power Systems Mfg., LLC (PSM), offers a solution with minimal methane slip and flexible fuel options, making it a viable alternative for reducing carbon emissions in marine operations.

Hanwha’s Growing Role in the Green Shipping Market

Since launching its Marine Solutions Business Division, Hanwha Power Systems has signed contracts with major global shipping companies for eco-friendly retrofitting projects, including LNG reliquefaction and energy-saving installations. The success of this ammonia gas turbine project could be a turning point in advancing green fuel solutions for the global shipping industry.
