Hanwha Ocean, formerly known as DSME, has commenced the construction of a new 174,000-cbm LNG carrier for BW LNG, a subsidiary of Singapore’s BW Group. The steel-cutting ceremony for the vessel, identified by hull number 2544, was held on July 24 at the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in Geoje, South Korea, according to LNG Prime.
Advanced Features and Delivery Timeline
The vessel is part of a four-ship order placed by BW LNG in 2022. It is equipped with advanced features including ME-GI propulsion, a full reliquefaction system, an air lubrication system, and shaft generators, all designed to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Hanwha Ocean is scheduled to deliver all four LNG carriers to BW LNG in 2025, expanding BW LNG’s fleet to 30 vessels, which includes a mix of steam carriers, TFDE vessels, ME-GI ships, and five FSRUs (Floating Storage and Regasification Units).
