Hapag Lloyd Looks at Scrubber for Compliance

1898

Hapag-Lloyd prepares for the upcoming global sulfur cap regulation and is keen to practically test the technical possibilities in small real time projects.

Testing cleaning systems

It says that it is currently preparing two pilot projects which includes the testing of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCSs), also known as ‘scrubbers’, on two large container ships as well as converting a large vessel in the company’s fleet to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion.

Why Hapag does this?

Hapag-Lloyd’s bunker consumption rose by 0.5m tonnes, or 29.4 percent, to 2.2m tonnes in the first six months of 2018 following last year’s merger with United Arab Shipping Company (UASC).

Hapag-Lloyd also joining hands with Trident Alliance – a coalition of ship owners and operators who share a common interest in the robust enforcement of maritime sulphur regulation as a means to ensure fair competition.
