Hapag-Lloyd has marked a major industry milestone with the order of the 1,000th B&W ME-GI dual-fuel engine, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable shipping.

The commemorative event took place at the company’s headquarters in Hamburg, where Everllence CEO Dr. Uwe Lauber presented a plaque to Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen and Managing Director Fleet Silke Lehmköster.

A Milestone for Maritime Decarbonisation

The engine ordered — a 7G95ME-GI — will power a newbuild container ship under construction in China. This model is part of a broader fleet upgrade strategy that aligns with Hapag-Lloyd’s ambition to lead in low-emission shipping technologies.

Habben Jansen emphasized the importance of such steps in decarbonising global supply chains, calling dual-fuel technologies “a key step” in the company’s sustainability journey.

Dr. Lauber echoed this sentiment, stating that the ME-GI engine, introduced in 2014, has become the marine industry’s default solution for dual-fuel, methane-powered propulsion — combining efficiency, low emissions, and technological maturity.

Container Segment Leads Dual-Fuel Adoption

With container shipping showing the strongest interest in the ME-GI engine, Lauber noted the significance of Hapag-Lloyd’s role as a front-runner. He highlighted the engine’s low methane slip and suitability as a transition fuel technology, particularly in 2025, which has already seen a surge in new ME-GI orders.

Hapag-Lloyd at a Glance

The 1,000th ME-GI engine order underscores not only the technical evolution of clean marine engines, but also the leadership role of companies like Hapag-Lloyd in driving maritime decarbonisation forward. As the shipping industry pushes toward net-zero targets, dual-fuel propulsion remains a key transitional solutio
