Hapag-Lloyd Trials NexusWave to Revolutionize Maritime Connectivity with ‘Floating Offices’

44

Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, has announced that Hapag-Lloyd, a leading global container shipping group, is one of the first to trial NexusWave. This fully managed service integrates a multi-orbit, multi-band network solution, delivering an unprecedented global connectivity experience. The trials align with Hapag-Lloyd’s need for a reliable connectivity solution that meets the increasing demands of communications, security, and the growing expectations for business and crew communication.

Transforming Ships into ‘Floating Offices’

NexusWave is unique among maritime communication solutions, providing an “office-like” and “home-like” experience with constant connectivity. The service eliminates concerns about usage limits, quotas, or speeds by tailoring onboard services to the owner-operator’s needs while offering complete transparency on total cost of ownership. NexusWave also includes an upgrade path to the ViaSat-3 network, making it a comprehensive and frictionless solution.

Enhancing Operations and Crew Welfare

The trials are designed to demonstrate how reliable high-speed Internet connections enable critical enterprise and IT functions to shift to the cloud, reducing the need for onboard maintenance and allowing shipboard personnel to stay connected with their office-based counterparts. This advancement in connectivity will enable the crew to access IT services previously available only onshore, transforming vessels into fully integrated floating offices.

Hapag-Lloyd’s Vision for Cloud-Based Maritime Operations

Patrick Briest, Senior Director IT – Network & Operations at Hapag-Lloyd, emphasized the transformative potential of NexusWave. He highlighted how the service allows vessels to seamlessly integrate with onshore and cloud-based IT systems, streamlining operations, achieving significant cost savings, and enhancing crew IT services to match onshore experiences.

Advanced Technology Ensuring Mission-Critical Connectivity

NexusWave leverages SD-WAN technology to intelligently bond and prioritize traffic, ensuring continuous connectivity for mission-critical operations while supporting services like remote video inspections. The service also separates business and crew welfare channels, significantly enhancing crew connectivity while maintaining robust operational support.

Security and Strategic Value in Maritime Operations

Designed with security at its core, NexusWave encrypts traffic at the vessel level and is protected by advanced enterprise-grade infrastructure trusted by leading enterprises and governments globally. Gert-Jan Panken, VP Sales at Inmarsat Maritime, highlighted the strategic value of NexusWave for Hapag-Lloyd, underscoring its ability to provide a seamless, secure, and robust communication environment that transforms maritime operations. He reaffirmed Inmarsat’s commitment to delivering solutions that exceed customer expectations and prepare them for future challenges.
