On July 20th, a chemical leak was reported from a container on a containership docked at the Waltershofer Damm container terminal in the Port of Hamburg, Germany, reports Safety4Sea.

Leak Involving Industrial Coating Agent

Around noon local time, a substance known as Lipaton, which is often used as a binding agent in industrial coatings, started leaking from a container. The chemical spilt onto the deck of the vessel and into the nearby harbour basin, raising environmental alarms.

Emergency Response Activated

The city’s fire department acted quickly, sending out two fireboats along with specialised technical and environmental teams. Crews set up oil snare devices and containment barriers to stop the chemical from spreading into the River Elbe.

Spill Contained, No Major Environmental Damage

While some of the substance did make its way into the water, officials confirmed that a significant environmental disaster was averted. By around 3:30 pm, the leak was effectively contained. An investigation into what caused the incident is currently in progress.
