- HD Hyundai signs MOA to integrate Anduril’s autonomous systems into USVs.
- Joint USV prototypes planned for Korean and U.S. markets by 2027.
- Korean Air teams up with Anduril to co-develop autonomous UAS for Asia-Pacific.
HD Hyundai Co. and Korean Air Co. announced separate agreements with U.S. defence tech company Anduril Industries Inc. Together, they aim to develop unmanned defence platforms, enhancing their foothold in AI-driven military systems, reports YNA.
HD Hyundai Signs MOA for Naval Platform Development
In a significant move, HD Hyundai, a major South Korean shipbuilding conglomerate, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Anduril on Wednesday at its global research centre in Seongnam. This follows an earlier memorandum of understanding (MOU) established in April.
As part of the MOA, HD Hyundai will incorporate Anduril’s autonomous mission execution systems into unmanned surface vessels (USVs) that are currently under development for the Korean market. Additionally, the company will offer AI-based autonomy solutions for both Anduril’s manned and unmanned naval platforms in the U.S. market, taking on responsibilities for ship design and construction as well.
Joint Development of Prototypes for Korean and U.S. Markets
The two companies are set to collaborate on developing prototype USVs tailored for both the Korean and U.S. markets, with the Korean version anticipated to be ready by around 2027.
Joo Won-ho, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ special ship business division, said, “Through collaboration with Anduril, which possesses world-class autonomous mission technology, we aim to develop the most advanced unmanned naval platforms.”
Korean Air’s Strategic Partnership for Unmanned Aircraft
Korean Air is making waves with its new strategic partnership with Anduril, aimed at co-developing autonomous unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) specifically for South Korea and the broader Asia-Pacific region. This exciting announcement came just as Anduril opened its new office in Seoul.
As part of this collaboration, Korean Air and Anduril plan to design UAS tailored to Korean needs, leveraging Anduril’s cutting-edge technology. They’re also looking into potential export opportunities in the region and are considering setting up manufacturing facilities right in South Korea.
Strengthening Capabilities in the Global UAS Market
“This partnership combines Korean Air’s proven expertise in UAS with Anduril’s cutting-edge AI technology,” said Lim Jin-kyu, senior vice president and head of Korean Air’s aerospace division. “This collaboration will enhance our capabilities and represent a significant milestone in the global unmanned systems market.”
Anduril’s Background and Current Clients
Since its inception in 2017, Anduril has made a name for itself with a software-first approach to defence, focusing on cutting-edge technologies like AI-driven mission control, autonomous surveillance, and reconnaissance. Today, the company provides systems to the U.S. Navy, the Department of Defence, and the Australian military.
