HD Hyundai Heavy, HMM Aim to 3-D Print Ship Parts by December

  • HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced a groundbreaking development in the shipbuilding industry: a new 3D printing technology for emergency maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) on operating ships. This innovation, marking a world first, was successfully evaluated and demonstrated at HD Hyundai Samho in Mokpo.
  • The project, supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, involves a consortium including Ulsan Metropolitan City, CSCAM, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HMM, and Korean Register, and is expected to be completed by December this year.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has developed 3D printing technology that enables urgent maintenance during ship operations.

HD Hyundai said, “We have developed the world’s first technology for urgent maintenance, repair, and maintenance (MRO) in ships. We have recently successfully demonstrated 3D printing convergence technology that can manufacture maintenance and repair parts on its own.”

Making 3-D Print ship parts

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries actually operated 3D printing equipment on the ship through a ‘3D printing digital workshop’ at the HD Hyundai Samho plant in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do, which recently demonstrated. 3D printing technology is a technology that can immediately manufacture parts needed at any time when ships operate at sea for a long time and cause an unexpected failure, reducing the cost and time to receive maintenance.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries also verified the technology for vibration reduction devices. Vibration reduction technology is an essential technology that minimizes movement and vibration so that 3D printers can operate stably even when a ship in operation is shaken.

HMM, a shipping company, decided to carry out demonstration by loading HD Hyundai’s ‘3D printing system for ships’ on container ships that actually operate commercially. HMM announced that it will check the smooth operation of the system in the actual operating environment and the availability of ship parts on the 9000 TEU container ship ‘HMM Green’.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is also planning to commercialize 3D printing maintenance technology that has been proven.
