- Joint Project with DNV and TUI Cruises Targets SOFC Deployment.
- Hyundai Aims for Leadership in Low-Carbon Cruise Technology.
- SOFCs Promise Clean, Quiet Power for Next-Gen Cruise Ships.
HD Hyundai and its affiliates—HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Europe R&D Centre, and HD Hydrogen—have teamed up with DNV and TUI Cruises for a Joint Development Project (JDP). Their mission is to dive into the potential of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems for cruise ships, reports HD Hyundai.
Cleaner, Quieter Power for the Seas
SOFCs produce electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen without burning anything, which means they cut down on carbon emissions and noise. Their impressive efficiency and minimal vibration make them a perfect fit for cruise ships, which require a reliable and steady power source.
European Market in Focus
HD Hyundai is setting its sights on Europe, where there’s a strong demand for eco-friendly ships and strict environmental regulations. This project aims to establish the company as a frontrunner in low-carbon maritime technology.
According to Grand View Research, the SOFC market is projected to hit USD 7.12 billion by 2030, with a staggering growth rate of 40.7%.
First Phase Underway
From June to February, HD KSOE and the European R&D Centre will be busy developing safety design standards. Meanwhile, HD Hydrogen will be testing the performance of SOFCs under various operating conditions using its cutting-edge technology.
Future Tech Development
In addition, HD Hyundai is exploring waste heat recovery systems and looking into carbon capture solutions to further reduce emissions from SOFCs.
DNV will ensure compliance and safety, while TUI Cruises will contribute cruise-specific operational and design insights.
Industry Support and Deployment
DNV will guide compliance and safety, while TUI Cruises will provide cruise-specific operational and design data. A representative from HD Hyundai said, “This international joint development project marks a significant milestone in demonstrating HD Hyundai’s world-class decarbonization technology for ships in the European market. We hope to lead the maritime decarbonization initiative through our low-carbon, high-efficiency fuel cell technology.”
HD Hyundai established HD Hydrogen last year and continues to partner globally to expand SOFC use across various vessel types.
