HD Hyundai Mipo has successfully delivered South Korea’s first hybrid-propulsion roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ship, a milestone in the country’s shipbuilding history, reports The Korea Bizwire.

Introduction of the Hybrid Ship

The ship, Chaumine, combines diesel engines with electric battery power. It was delivered to CLdN, a Luxembourg shipping firm, and is a major step forward in green maritime transport.

Specifications and Cargo Capacity

The Chaumine is a 25,000 DWT-type ship, 234 meters in length, 35 meters wide, and 33.25 meters high. Optimized for cargo efficiency, it has eight cargo decks, of which three are adjustable car decks, facilitating the carriage of about 510 trailers and 920 passenger cars simultaneously.

Propulsion and Fuel Efficiency

Fitted with a twin-shaft propulsion system, the ship spreads thrust via two propellers, promoting better fuel economy and operational stability. A shaft generator, which is linked to a high-capacity battery system, supports self-propulsion and further enhances fuel economy, making it an eco-friendly and cost-saving addition to the international shipping market.

Advanced Eco-Friendly Technologies

The Chaumine features several advanced green technologies designed to lower emissions and environmental footprint. An SCR system reduces the emission of nitrogen oxides, and an exhaust gas recirculation system keeps methane slips at bay. The ship also has shore power supply equipment, enabling it to draw electricity from land-based sources when at the dock, greatly lowering emissions during port stops and helping to make maritime operations cleaner.

Autonomous Navigation Features

The ship is also equipped with HiNAS SVM and HiNAS Navigation, cutting-edge navigation support systems designed by Avikus, HD Hyundai’s autonomous ship technology unit. The systems improve operational efficiency and safety through real-time navigation support, a testament to the company’s dedication to incorporating innovative technologies into contemporary shipbuilding.

Company Statement

An HD Hyundai Mipo representative stated: “This delivery of a hybrid-propulsion car carrier, fully equipped with advanced green and digital technologies, positions us at the forefront of responding to the rising demand for environmentally friendly vessels and leading the global automotive carrier market.”
