HD Hyundai Units Team Up To Accelerate Autonomous Ship Technology

13

Two affiliates of South Korea’s HD Hyundai — Avikus and HD Hyundai ENT — have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to fast-track the development and commercialization of autonomous navigation systems for ships, marking a major push in maritime innovation.

Focus on HiNAS and Engineering Collaboration

The agreement, signed on July 1, focuses on two key areas:

  • Wider application of Avikus’s HiNAS autonomous navigation system

  • Comprehensive engineering collaboration across autonomous ship technologies

The move follows DNV’s validation of the HiNAS Control Standard on June 5, 2025, underscoring the system’s global recognition.

Strategic Partnerships and Growing Adoption

Avikus has been expanding rapidly:

  • In December 2024, it signed with H-Line Shipping to install HiNAS on 5+5 vessels, with plans to expand to 30.

  • In April 2025, Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) selected Avikus for a bulk carrier and a Suezmax tanker.

National Backing and Legal Framework

South Korea is providing strong institutional support:

  • In January 2025, the Autonomous Ship Act came into force, promoting development and commercialization of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS).

  • In April 2025, the government unveiled a 10-year roadmap to modernize the shipping industry through digitalization and autonomy.

With industry-leading tech like HiNAS, strong corporate collaboration, and robust government support, South Korea is solidifying its position as a global leader in autonomous maritime innovation.
