South Korean shipbuilding giant HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has landed a contract to build twelve containerships for an undisclosed European shipowner. The contract, valued at KRW 3.7 trillion ($2.67 billion), is divided between HD KSOE’s subsidiaries, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho, each constructing six vessels. The ships are scheduled for delivery by June 2028.
Recent Orders and Achievements
At the start of this month, HD KSOE also secured an order for two very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) to be built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, with delivery expected by September 2028. The company has already secured contracts for 144 ships this year, surpassing its annual target, with a combined value of $16.2 billion.
Innovative Technology Developments
HD KSOE recently introduced an integrated scrubber technology for ammonia-powered ships, designed to significantly reduce emissions. This eco-friendly technology captures emitted ammonia in two stages, aiming for near-zero emissions, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping solutions.
Impressive Contract Performance
In 2023, HD KSOE signed contracts worth $22.6 billion, exceeding its annual order target of $15.7 billion. This includes the construction of various vessels such as liquefied natural gas carriers, petrochemical carriers, and liquefied petroleum gas and ammonia carriers, solidifying HD KSOE’s position as a leading shipbuilder.
