  • HDF Energy Develops Hydrogen Power Plants to Fuel Indonesia’s Maritime Transition.
  • ASDP and PLN Collaborate on Green Hydrogen Solutions for Indonesian Ferry Network.
  • HDF Energy Signs MoU with PT BAg for Clean Energy Solutions in Shipping.

On April 16, 2025, HDF Energy’s Indonesian subsidiary, PT HDF Energy Indonesia, inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Transportation (MoT), state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero), and ferry firm PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero). The agreement spells out a joint study on decarbonising Indonesia’s shipping sector through the utilisation of locally made green hydrogen. The study will be jointly funded by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), reports Actus News.

Renewstable® Hydrogen Power Plants to Facilitate Decarbonization

The research will focus on Eastern Indonesia, which is abundant in sunlight and hosts a large number of ASDP’s strategic ferry routes. HDF Energy is constructing 23 Renewstable® hydrogen power plants in the area. These power plants integrate solar parks with on-site energy storage in the form of green hydrogen, offering stable, 100% clean electricity to the grid both day and night. The excess hydrogen generated will also be utilised for the decarbonization of shipping through high-power fuel cells designed by HDF Energy in France.

By generating surplus green hydrogen at a competitive marginal cost, Renewstable® plants pave the way for the supply of green hydrogen to decarbonise maritime transport,” said Mathieu Geze, HDF Energy’s Director for APAC and President Director of PT HDF Energy Indonesia.

Role of ASDP and PLN in the Study

ASDP, a global leader in ferry operations, will have a central role in the study as it will explore opportunities to retrofit its fleet and port facilities to utilise green hydrogen and renewable electricity. The aim is to replace conventional diesel engines with clean substitutes, lowering emissions substantially.

PLN, which has already introduced hydrogen pilot schemes throughout Indonesia, will also participate in the study, reinforcing the wider move toward sustainable energy options.

MoU with PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna for Clean Shipping Energy

Aside from the agreement with MoT, PLN, and ASDP, HDF Energy entered into another MoU with PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna (PT BAg), a state-owned shipping company. The collaboration will evaluate hydrogen as a clean solution to fuel auxiliary systems on large ships.

Commitment to a Net-Zero Emission Future

Mathieu Geze, Director of HDF Energy, expressed the company’s dedication to a Net Zero emission future: “We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to a Net Zero emission future through this strategic collaboration. Working together with PLN, ASDP, the Ministry of Transportation, and PT Bag, we aim to place Indonesia at the forefront of green hydrogen innovation in the Asia-Pacific.”

Strengthening France-Indonesia Relations in Energy Innovation

H.E. Fabien Penone, Ambassador of France to Indonesia, highlighted the significance of the partnership: “This agreement is a symbol of the mutually beneficial partnership between France and Indonesia in the field of energy. The densification of our economic relations is a shared priority agreed upon by the Presidents of our two countries.”

IMO’s Support for Clean Energy Pathways in Shipping

Jose Matheickal, Director of the IMO’s Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division, emphasized the importance of the partnership: “This initiative demonstrates how national leadership, coupled with multi-stakeholder collaboration, can lay the groundwork for meaningful progress toward a zero-emission maritime future.”

HDF Energy’s Regional Expansion in Southeast Asia

This partnership is included in HDF Energy’s overall expansion strategy in Southeast Asia. HDF recently inked an MoU in the Philippines to power the future generation of seafaring ships using green hydrogen and formed a partnership with ACST in Vietnam to upgrade diesel ferries using HDF’s hydrogen fuel cells.
