Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, Singapore is taking proactive measures to address the uptick and safeguard healthcare capacity. The Health Ministry’s briefing on December 15, 2023, reported a significant rise in weekly cases, prompting the government to implement additional strategies.

Health Ministry’s Briefing Highlights Surge in Cases

In the week of December 3 to 9, 2023, COVID-19 cases in Singapore soared to 56,043, marking a substantial increase from the previous week’s count of 32,035. The briefing also revealed a rise in average daily hospitalizations and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) cases, emphasizing the need for swift action.

Government Initiatives to Address the Surge

To counter the surge, Singapore’s health ministry is collaborating with public hospitals for contingency planning. This includes reinforcing manpower, deferring non-urgent elective procedures, and leveraging alternative care models like Mobile Inpatient Care@Home. Additionally, the opening of the second Covid-19 Treatment Facility (CTF) at Singapore EXPO Hall 10 is a proactive step to manage potential increased demand.

Public Health Guidelines and Urgent Appeal

In response to the situation, the public has been strongly urged to adhere to precautionary measures. This includes staying home if experiencing respiratory infection symptoms, wearing masks, minimizing social interactions, and avoiding crowded places. The health ministry emphasizes the crucial role of vaccination in preventing severe illness and encourages mask usage, particularly in crowded places and at airports.

Enhanced Reporting

Starting December 19, 2023, the Singapore Health Ministry will provide daily updates on COVID-19 case numbers via its website, fostering transparency and awareness during this critical period.
