The general cargo ship Mechanik Fomin developed a heavy list to portboard in Norwegian Sea west off Narvik after cargo shift.
What happened?
The vessel was en route to Inverness in the UK with a cargo of timber, when some of the deck cargo fell overboard, which caused heavy list and danger for the seaworthiness.
The crew reported the accident to the local authorities and coast guard rescue boats responded to the troubled freighter. Meanwhile, the cargo ship Mechanik Fomin changed course to towards Norwegian coast, heading for Sortland.
Escorted to safety:
The coast guard rescue boats escorted the freighter in the case of worsening of the situation, being ready to evacuate the 13 crew.
Fortunately, the general cargo ship Mechanik Fomin arrived successfully in Sortland, where the situation was taken under control and the vessel was stabilized.
During the accident, there were no injured people and no reported water pollution. The investigation into the root cause of the accident is under way.

As some part of the cargo from the freighter fell overboard in Norwegian Sea west off Narvik, the local authorities sent notice to mariners to be cautious when navigating through the area.
