HEMEXPO Joins EU-Funded SEASTARS Project To Accelerate Maritime Decarbonization

41

HEMEXPO, the marine equipment manufacturers and exporters association for the international shipping industry, has joined the EU Horizon Innovation Action project titled SEASTARS — Sustainable Emission Abatement Strategies & Technologies for Advanced Revolution Ships. The project aims to help shipowners implement practical and scalable decarbonization solutions to meet climate goals and upcoming regulations.

Key Targets and Objectives

SEASTARS has set two core goals to be achieved by 2030:

  • 30% reduction in well-to-wake greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (compared to 2008 levels).

  • 20% increase in energy efficiency (compared to 2022 levels).

These targets align with both EU and global maritime decarbonization mandates, offering compliant solutions for newbuilds and retrofits across inland, short-sea, and ocean-going vessels.

Flexible, Scalable Solutions Through MBSE

The project uses Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to:

  • Reduce investment risk for shipowners.

  • Enable modular, flexible, and scalable technology adoption.

  • Ensure compliance with evolving maritime regulations.

Technological Innovations

SEASTARS integrates a broad range of efficiency-boosting and emissions-reducing technologies, including:

Hydrodynamic Enhancements

  • Propeller-hull optimization

  • Air lubrication systems

Machinery Innovations

  • Fuel cells

  • Electric motors

  • Solar panels

  • Wind-assisted propulsion

  • Electrochemical energy storage

Alternative Fuels & Energy Systems

  • Biofuels, hydrogen, methanol, LNG, ammonia

  • Fuel reforming

  • Carbon capture & storage (CCS)

HEMEXPO’s Role in the Consortium

As a project partner, HEMEXPO will:

  • Lead design thinking workshops to align technological innovation with practical operational needs.

  • Facilitate collaboration among shipowners, shipbuilders, tech providers, and operators.

  • Ensure the solutions developed are realistic, implementable, and industry-ready.
