Hercules Tanker Management (HTM) has announced a new milestone in its fleet development strategy with a contract to build six state-of-the-art chemical tankers, with the option to add four more. The vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 7,700, will be constructed by the Jiangmen Hangtong shipyard in China, marking an expansion of HTM’s previous collaboration with the yard. This development, reported by Seatrade Maritime, reflects HTM’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector.

Advanced Vessel Features

The newly commissioned tankers are equipped with cutting-edge technology, making them among the most advanced in their class. These “ultra-spec” vessels are capable of transporting methanol and operating on 100% biofuel, providing crucial flexibility to Peninsula, the global bunker supply company owned by HTM’s founder, John A. Bassadone. Additional features include diesel-electric, battery-ready power systems, and twin-engine Schottel propulsion units.

These advancements are designed to enhance manoeuvrability and safety during ship-to-ship transfers and loading operations. Moreover, the integration of these technologies ensures a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions—approximately 20% lower than conventional product tankers—positioning HTM as a leader in environmentally responsible shipping.

Strategic Importance

Bassadone, founder and CEO of both HTM and Peninsula, highlighted the strategic value of the newbuilds, stating that the vessels align closely with customer needs and underscore HTM’s commitment to fleet renewal and growth. Delivery Timeline

HTM plans to take delivery of the first four vessels in Q2 2025, with the remaining tankers to follow in 2026. This phased delivery approach ensures a smooth integration of the new ships into HTM’s operations while maintaining service continuity for its clients.

The addition of these advanced chemical tankers will further strengthen HTM’s fleet, which already comprises over 40 vessels, including deep-sea tankers, smaller product and fuel supply tankers, and an LNG bunkering vessel.
