HGK Shipping has officially unveiled its latest gas tanker, “GAS 96,” during a ceremony in Rotterdam on 9 October 2025. This new vessel represents a major advancement in eco-friendly and efficient inland waterway transport, marking HGK Shipping’s third gas tanker optimized for shallow-water operations.

Future-Ready Design and Operational Capabilities

The GAS 96 is equipped with a diesel-electric, fuel-ready propulsion system that supports both current and future energy requirements. The vessel will operate on routes between Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Cologne under a long-term charter with LyondellBasell (LYB). Designed at HGK’s Shipping Design Center, the tanker features four cargo tanks with a total volume of 3,256 cubic meters.

With a length of 110 meters and a width of 15 meters, GAS 96 can safely operate even when water levels are extremely low. Its shallow 1.20-meter draught allows it to carry over 300 tons of cargo, ensuring dependable performance in challenging conditions. Under ideal conditions, the vessel’s cargo capacity exceeds 2,500 tons.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

According to Yarelis Hernandez, Vice President at LYB, the GAS 96 is a clear example of our innovative partnership with HGK Shipping. Sustainable logistics and supply reliability are essential to our operations and those of our partner Covestro.

Anke Bestmann, Managing Director of HGK Gas Shipping GmbH, highlighted the vessel’s intelligent design, emphasizing that its power management system significantly reduces fuel use and emissions, aligning with HGK’s sustainability goals.

The vessel was christened by Hernandez and Reverend Daniel Odhiambo, alongside representatives from HGK Shipping, during the Rotterdam ceremony.

With the launch of GAS 96, HGK Shipping reinforces its leadership in sustainable inland shipping solutions. The vessel’s advanced propulsion system, shallow-water capability, and energy-efficient design make it a benchmark for future inland gas carriers driving both environmental responsibility and operational excellence across Europe’s waterways.
