Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) recently conducted a sea trial of the Starlink satellite communication service, offered by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (Space X) through Marlink AS, on one of its ocean-going vessels.

Successful sea trial

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) conducted a successful sea trial of the Starlink satellite communication service on one of their vessels. The trial showcased significant improvements in communication speed, up to 50 times faster than conventional systems. Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency connectivity will enhance safe operations and enable real-time sharing of systems and data between ship and shore. It will also provide seafarers with high-speed communication during their off-duty hours, positively impacting morale and well-being. MOL plans to conduct continuous trials on multiple vessels and aims to develop a future vision for shipboard operations and lifestyles by improving onboard communication environments. They are committed to adopting such systems across the MOL Group-operated vessels.

Satellite communication

The crewmember on the trial vessel emphasized the importance of improved Internet connectivity at sea for seafarers to connect with their loved ones in real time through video calls. MOL Group recognizes the significance of enhancing the quality of onboard life for seafarers and embracing digital transformation. They plan to utilize satellite communication services that provide high-speed, low-latency connections, addressing the inferior communication environment at sea compared to land.
