On December 26th, all ten docks at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan Shipyard in South Korea were fully occupied with ships under construction. This demonstrates the high level of activity and demand within the shipbuilding industry. The shipyard, known for its impressive scale, boasts a massive dock that could accommodate up to four LNG/LPG carriers simultaneously. This level of activity underscores the industry’s current boom and highlights the significant role of South Korean shipbuilders in meeting global demand, reports Chosun Biz.

Heart Of Ships

The HiMSEN Engine, a medium-speed engine developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, is considered the “heart” of many ships. These powerful engines, weighing up to 90 tons and measuring 3.5 to 4 meters high, are responsible for generating electricity onboard.

Medium-speed engine development is a challenging domain, with only a few countries like Finland, Germany, and Japan boasting a long history of success. HD Hyundai’s achievement in independently developing and successfully marketing the HiMSEN Engine globally is remarkable, particularly considering the company’s relatively shorter history in engine development.

The company has achieved a global market share of approximately 35% for medium-speed engines, a testament to its commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. As Yu, Executive Director of Quality and Planning at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, emphasized, building trust with customers is paramount in this competitive market. HD Hyundai has consistently demonstrated its commitment to resolving customer issues, regardless of the time or cost involved.

Large Market Share

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries not only dominates the medium-speed engine market but also holds a significant 35% share in the global large engine market. While they may not be the original designers, their production volume and quality are unmatched. They produce around 300 large engines annually, a significant output compared to their competitors, including Chinese manufacturers who collectively produce around 700 units per year.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries emphasizes continuous innovation and customer collaboration. They actively engage with customers to understand their specific needs and modify engine designs accordingly. This proactive approach has enabled them to stay ahead of the curve and drive technological advancements in the industry.

In October 2024, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries achieved a significant milestone by developing the world’s first high-pressure direct-injection ammonia dual-fuel engine (H22CDF-LA). This innovative technology offers superior performance and efficiency compared to previous low-pressure premixed systems.

Developing this technology presented significant challenges, as ammonia is a highly flammable substance. HD Hyundai overcame these challenges by optimizing fuel injection timing and redesigning key components. They also implemented robust safety measures, including advanced gas detection systems, to ensure safe operation.
