Historic SS United States Prepared for New Life as Artificial Reef Off Florida Coast

9

The historic ocean liner SS United States is being prepared for its new role as the world’s largest artificial reef. On August 3, 2025, the ship’s iconic forward funnel was removed with the help of a crane and placed on a barge. This massive funnel, which stood as tall as a six-story building, was a characteristic element of the ship’s design, which enabled it to hold the transatlantic speed record since 1952. The second funnel is scheduled to be removed in the coming days. Other structural components, including the propeller, cargo booms, steam anchor, and radar mast, have already been removed for preservation.

Preserving the Legacy

The SS United States Conservancy, which sold the ship to Florida’s Okaloosa County, is working with the county to transport and store the removed funnel. The Conservancy, which had been the ship’s owner, is now focused on creating a future SS United States Museum and Visitor Experience. This land-based museum will incorporate key salvaged components from the ship, such as the funnels and radar mast, to honor its legacy. The museum is being designed to be a centerpiece of the project, complementing the underwater reef and offering a unique experience for non-divers to learn about the ship’s history.

Historical Context and Controversy

The decision to turn the SS United States into an artificial reef has been met with opposition. Several groups have attempted to block the plan, arguing that the ship, which is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, should be preserved in its entirety. The Conservancy has stated that this path was chosen as the most dignified option after all other efforts to restore and repurpose the ship as a floating museum or hotel were exhausted. The project, which is funded in part by Okaloosa County, aims to create a new chapter for the ship as a tourist destination and marine habitat.
