Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has announced a strong financial performance for the first quarter of 2025. The South Korean container shipping company reported a 23% year-on-year increase in revenue, reaching KRW 2,855 billion (approximately US$2 billion).

Furthermore, HMM achieved a 51% rise in operating profit, reaching KRW 614 billion (US$439 million), and a 52% growth in net profit to KRW 740 billion (US$520 million). The company’s operating margin also improved significantly, rising to 21.5% compared to 17.5% in the same period last year.

An HMM official attributed this solid profit growth to “fleet expansion, the launch of new services, and strengthened sales efforts,” despite the challenges posed by declining freight rates and the impact of U.S. tariff policies.

Looking ahead, HMM anticipates continued volatility in the market due to ongoing U.S. tariff negotiations, potential vessel oversupply, and geopolitical instability, particularly the uncertainty surrounding the resumption of transit through the Red Sea. The company also foresees that a decline in cargo volume from China to the U.S. could further disrupt the supply-demand balance and exert downward pressure on freight rates.
