HMM Sky wraps up first STS bunkering

The 7,700 TEU vessel, HMM SKY, which is the first LNG-fuelled containership in Korea, received approximately 2,400 metric tonnes (mt) of LNG bunker fuel as it underwent cargo handling. The LNG supply was delivered by bunkering vessel Blue Whale according to images shared by the company.

This achievement enhances operational efficiency and supports the transition to low-carbon fuels, contributing to more sustainable shipping practices,” HMM said in a social media post.

HMM is introducing the addition of two LNG-powered 7,700 TEU container vessels, HMM Ocean and HMM Sky. Ordered by Greek shipowner Navios and built by HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, the vessels were chartered by HMM for up to 14 years and deployed on HMM’s FIM (Far East – India – Mediterranean) service, starting January 2025.

Meanwhile, HMM ordered nine methanol-powered ships, which are eco-friendly ships, from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HJ Heavy Industries in 2023 and plans to receive them sequentially starting next year.
