- HMM announced that all of its twelve 24,000 TEU containerships have been entirely filled with cargoes on their first voyage.
- HMM St. Petersburg, the last of the 24K-class series, departed for Europe from the Port of Yantian, China with 19,529 TEUs loaded on board.
- All 24,000 TEU ships delivered by HMM have made their maiden voyage with a full load of cargoes, starting with HMM Algeciras which carried a total of 19,621 TEUs last May.
- HMM Algeciras and its two sister ships, HMM Oslo and HMM Copenhagen, embarked on their second journey full of export shipments from Asia to Europe.
South Korean container line HMM is claiming success with its series of 24,000 teu containerships with all of the newbuildings “full” with cargo carrying around 19,500 teu, reads the company website.
Largest containerships
When the series of 24,000 teu boxships started to be delivered earlier this year there were concerns over the timing as the market was hitting a deep slump due to Covid-19. However, lines have aggressively managed capacity through blank sailings and focus ultra-large vessels resulting a in a far better market than had been feared.
With a nominal capacity of 24,000 teu the series are the largest containerships in the world to date, however, factors such as cargo weight and stability mean the actual number of loaded containers such vessels can carry is significantly less than the nominal capacity.
According to HMM, “The maximum loadable capacity stands at around 19,300 teu.”
Fully laden vessels
HMM declared that all 12 newbuildings were fully laden on their maiden voyages with the final vessel the HMM St Petersburg departing Yantian, China for Europe on 30 September with 19,529 teu onboard.
All 12 newbuilds carried in the range of 19,459 teu to 19,621 teu on their first voyages from Asia to Europe.

- The first, the HMM Algeciras, was deployed in April carrying 19,621 TEUs. The HMM Algeciras and sister ships HMM Oslo and HMM Copenagen have all embarked on their second journeys from Asia to Europe.
- The last of the series, the HMM St. Petersburg, departed the Port of Yantian in China with 19,529 TEUs on board. The St. Petersburg will transit the Suez Canal en route to the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with an estimated arrival on October 23.
- HMM expects to take delivery of eight 16,000-TEU container ships in the second quarter of 2021.
