Malaysia reported 327 cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in 2024, marking a 45% increase from 225 cases in 2023, according to the Health Ministry’s statement on January 4, reports The Straits Times.
HMPV, a respiratory illness caused by a virus from the Pneumoviridae family, is not new. Symptoms often resemble the common cold, though severe cases can escalate to bronchitis or pneumonia.
The Health Ministry emphasized the importance of public vigilance as respiratory infections remain prevalent. It urged individuals to adopt preventive measures, including regular handwashing with soap, wearing face masks, and covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
“Proactive health management is crucial to minimize the risk of spreading infections, especially in enclosed or crowded areas and during travel to higher-risk countries,” the ministry advised.
Seasonal Trends and Global Outlook
The ministry noted that respiratory infections typically rise at the start and end of the year, a trend also observed in countries with cooler climates like China.
In China’s northern provinces, an increase in HMPV cases, particularly among children under 14, has been reported. Between December 16 and 22, 2024, infections from acute respiratory diseases rose sharply, according to Reuters.
China’s health authorities are enhancing monitoring systems for pneumonia of unknown origin to bolster preparedness, a stark contrast to the initial challenges during the emergence of Covid-19 in 2019.
Malaysia’s Health Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring respiratory infections domestically and globally, enhancing readiness, and implementing appropriate measures to safeguard public health.
