  • Singapore’s rise in human metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases is part of a seasonal respiratory virus trend.
  • The Ministry of Health (MOH) links the increase to holiday travel and gatherings during the year-end.
  • MOH emphasizes hygiene practices and social responsibility to reduce infections.

Amid rising cases of flu-like human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, Singapore has observed a seasonal uptick in infections. According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), this trend aligns with typical seasonal patterns of respiratory viruses and mirrors similar surges seen during colder months. As CNA reports, increased social gatherings and travel during the festive season further increase the spike.

Seasonal Trend Observed

In 2024, the weekly HMPV positivity rate in Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) samples ranged from 0.8% to 9.0%, with December seeing the highest range of 5.5% to 9.0%.

According to MOH, this surge aligns with annual patterns observed in temperate regions during the colder winter season.

Hygiene and Social Responsibility

MOH advises the public to adopt good hygiene habits, including frequent handwashing, covering the mouth and nose when sneezing, and discarding tissues immediately after use.

People with mild symptoms should stay home, limit social interactions, wear masks when necessary, and avoid crowded areas.

Vulnerable Groups and Medical Attention

Medically vulnerable groups, such as young children, older people, and individuals with chronic conditions, are encouraged to consult a doctor if respiratory symptoms develop.

MOH underscores the importance of timely medical care for these groups.

No Major Cause for Concern

While the rise in HMPV cases coincides with global concerns, MOH has reassured the public that the trend is consistent with past years and manageable with preventive measures.
