Höegh Autoliners Partners with Kongsberg Maritime for Propulsion Upgrades on PCTC Fleet

51

Höegh Autoliners, a global leader in ocean transportation services, has selected Kongsberg Maritime to upgrade the propulsion systems on ten of its Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels. These upgrades are part of the company’s broader commitment to enhancing vessel performance and reducing its environmental impact.

Propulsion System Upgrades

The upgrades will involve the installation of Kongsberg Maritime’s Promas Lite propulsion system on Höegh Autoliners’ DSME Class PCTC vessels. Promas Lite is specifically designed for retrofitting existing vessels, integrating the propeller, hub cap, bulb, and rudder into a single propulsion unit. This design aims to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. According to hydrodynamic studies conducted at Kongsberg Maritime’s Hydrodynamic Research Centre, the propulsion upgrades are expected to deliver fuel savings of at least 6.5%. These predictions have been supported by full-scale data collected from two vessels that have already undergone the retrofit.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sebjørn Dahl, COO of Höegh Autoliners, emphasized the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental footprint, noting that continuous improvement in vessel performance through energy-efficient solutions is a key part of their strategy. The partnership with Kongsberg Maritime and the adoption of the Promas Lite system align with this vision, helping the company reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions while advancing its sustainability goals.

Broader Collaboration and Future Initiatives

Kongsberg Maritime is a longstanding partner of Höegh Autoliners and has also secured additional contracts to supply critical components for the company’s new Aurora Class vessels. These components include the K-Bridge navigation system, the K-IMS emission monitoring and reporting system, the K-Chief engine control system, and the PROMAS propulsion system. The Aurora Class vessels, set to be the largest and most environmentally friendly PCTC vessels ever built, represent Höegh Autoliners’ ongoing efforts to decarbonize its fleet. By 2027, the Aurora vessels will be capable of running on ammonia, marking a significant step toward zero-carbon shipping in the PCTC segment.

Höegh Autoliners’ propulsion upgrade project with Kongsberg Maritime underscores the company’s leadership in sustainable maritime operations. Through innovative technology and strategic partnerships, Höegh Autoliners is driving advancements in fuel efficiency and emissions reduction, setting a new benchmark for environmentally conscious shipping.
