Hong Kong Achieves First-Ever LNG Bunkering with Simultaneous Cargo Handling

CLPe Holdings, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based electricity company CLP, and state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) have achieved a significant milestone in their partnership by successfully completing Hong Kong’s first-ever LNG bunkering operation with simultaneous cargo handling (SIMOPS)

Milestone Operation

Hong Kong’s Kwai Tsing Container Terminals witnessed a milestone operation on June 5, where the German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd’s containership, Hanoi Express, received approximately 10,000 cubic meters of LNG fuel concurrently with its cargo handling.

This groundbreaking operation, a collaboration between CNOOC and CLPe, integrated the bunkering and cargo processes into a single, streamlined procedure. This efficiency allowed the Hanoi Express to be refueled with LNG within 24 hours while simultaneously loading and unloading cargo at the terminal, significantly reducing its port turnaround time and operating costs.

For the bunkering, CNOOC deployed the 184.7-meter-long bunker vessel Haiyang Shiyou 301. Described as the first domestically built LNG bunkering vessel in mainland China, the Haiyang Shiyou 301 is equipped for both LNG transportation and bunkering, primarily serving international maritime vessels. It is also highlighted as “the largest LNG bunkering and transport vessel in the world,” boasting a storage capacity of 30,000 cubic meters and an impressive refueling rate of 1,650 cubic meters per hour.

Beyond being Hong Kong’s inaugural LNG bunkering with simultaneous cargo handling, this event also marked the city’s largest single LNG bunkering operation to date.
