In 2024, the Port of Hong Kong handled 13.69m teu, 4.9% fewer boxes than in 2023 when the port saw container throughput of 14.4m teu. Just 10 years ago, the Port of Hong Kong’s container throughput was 22.23m teu, reports the Hongkong Maritime Hub.
Decline in container throughput
The persistent declines in container throughput in Hong Kong over the decade, due to increased competition from ports on the mainland, contrasts sharply with a 33.48% growth in worldwide port throughput from 675m teu to an estimated 901m teu in 2024.
In 2023, the Port of Hong Kong was ranked 10th busiest container port in the world By Lloyd’s List, closely followed by Malaysia’s Port Klang. Figures for Port Klang are yet to be made publicly available, Malaysia’s Transport Minister felt confident enough to announce on 7 January that Port Klang would be claiming 10th position for 2024.
In December 2024, the Kwai Tsing terminals handled 871,000 teu, 2.5% fewer than in December 2023, while mainstream operators saw box throughput of 320,000 teu, 8.5% down on the figure in the previous year.
