According to Informare, the Port of Hong Kong, once a dominant force in global container shipping, has steadily lost its position among the world’s leading ports over the past two decades.
Decline in Global Ranking
Hong Kong was once the world’s top container port, a title it held for many years. However, it was first overtaken by Singapore, then Shanghai, and the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 marked the beginning of an unstoppable decline.
Recent Performance in 2024
In the first nine months of 2024, Hong Kong handled almost 10.2 million TEU, a decrease of 5.7% compared to the same period last year. The third quarter alone saw a drop of 7.1%, with only 3.4 million TEU processed.
Ongoing Challenges
Despite its once-dominant status, Hong Kong faces persistent challenges in maintaining competitiveness against other leading global ports, signaling a continued decline.
