The Chief Executive kicked off Hong Kong Maritime Week 2025 and the World Maritime Merchants Forum 2025, warmly welcoming delegates to Asia’s vibrant world city and shining a spotlight on Hong Kong’s role as a premier global maritime hub, reports Hong Kong.

Themes Centred on Sustainability and Transformation

This year’s themes, “Navigating to a Greener Future” for Maritime Week and “Steering Sustainability Through Changes” for the Forum, were presented as crucial calls to action in light of geopolitical challenges, technological shifts, and climate concerns.

Hong Kong’s Strategic Role Under “One Country, Two Systems”

The emphasis was placed on Hong Kong’s stability and vibrancy as a maritime centre, bolstered by the “one country, two systems” framework. Its bilingual common law system, straightforward tax structure, free port status, and the unrestricted flow of capital, information, and talent continue to enhance its global reputation.

Global Recognition and a Robust Maritime Cluster

For the sixth year in a row, Hong Kong secured the fourth spot globally in the International Shipping Centre Development Index, highlighting its strengths in infrastructure, services, and operational environment. The city is home to over 1,200 maritime-related companies, covering areas like ship management, finance, insurance, and legal services. The establishment of the Hong Kong Shipowners Mutual Assurance Association marks another significant step in reinforcing its position as a “super-connector” and “super value-adder.”

Tax Incentives to Attract Premium Maritime Services

Hong Kong’s tax incentives remain a magnet for international businesses, and plans to extend half-rate concessions to physical commodity traders aim to better integrate trade, commodities, and shipping.

Advancing Green Maritime Development

The Chief Executive emphasised Hong Kong’s commitment to becoming a leader in green maritime fuel bunkering, in line with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) ambitious target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in global shipping by 2050. Since launching the Green Maritime Fuel Bunkering Action Plan, Hong Kong has rolled out regular services for LNG and biodiesel bunkering. Its strategic location near Mainland China, the largest producer of green maritime fuel in the world, gives it a strong advantage for future growth.

Collaboration Essential for Global Maritime Progress

The speech highlighted the importance of international collaboration to tackle various challenges, such as geopolitical tensions, protectionism, technological advancements, and climate risks. Hong Kong urged collective efforts to create green shipping corridors and digital trade lanes, which would enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in global shipping.

Hong Kong’s Commitment to the Maritime Sector

Hong Kong reiterated its willingness to collaborate with global industry leaders, providing policy support, expertise, and a long-term vision. The Chief Executive wrapped up with hopes for a successful Maritime Week and Forum, wishing everyone success in the maritime sector moving forward.
