Houthi Attacks on Shipping in Bab el-Mandeb Amid Escalating Regional Tensions

Authorities reported three suspected attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeting a ship in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial waterway connecting the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea. In one incident, private security guards successfully intercepted and destroyed a bomb-laden drone boat.

Context and Broader Campaign

Although the Houthis have not officially claimed responsibility, the assaults are part of a broader, months-long campaign linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. Since November, these attacks have disrupted the flow of $1 trillion in goods through the Red Sea corridor, leading to some of the most intense U.S. Navy combat since World War II.

Renewed Hostilities

After a brief two-week pause, the Houthi attacks resumed, likely triggered by the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. The Houthis, supported by Iran within a regional “Axis of Resistance,” appear to be escalating their actions amid fears of a broader regional conflict.

Houthi Leadership’s Position

In a speech, Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi confirmed ongoing operations targeting Israel and maritime interests, highlighting coordinated efforts within the “Axis of Resistance.” He emphasized that the decision to respond is made collectively across various fronts in the region.

Impact on Global Shipping and Security

The attacks have raised significant concerns for international shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, disrupting global trade and heightening military tensions in the region.
