On May 19, Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group announced what it described as a maritime blockade targeting Israel’s Haifa port. The move is in response to Israel’s ongoing military actions in Gaza, reports Reuters.
Shipping Companies Warned
In a televised address, Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated: “All companies with ships present in or heading to this port are hereby notified that, as of the time of this announcement, the aforementioned port has been included in the list of targets.”
Missile Attacks on Israel Continue
The Houthis have continued the practice of firing missiles toward Israel, including toward Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, claiming solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. Most of the missiles have reportedly been intercepted by Israeli defence systems.
No More Attacks Against U.S. Vessels
While aggression against Israeli targets continued, the Houthis agreed to desist from attacks on American ships.
Israel conducted airstrikes to retaliate, including the May 6 airstrike on the main airport of Yemen, Sanaa, killing several people and causing extensive damage.
