- Four Filipino Crew Presumed Dead, Questions Remain Over Missing Sailor.
On July 28, Yemen’s Houthi rebels shared a video showing ten crew members from the Greek-owned ship ETERNITY C, which they attacked and sank in the Red Sea earlier that month, reports Safety4Sea.
Missing Crew Seen in Custody, Claim “Good Shelter” Provided
The footage features ten individuals, part of the twelve crew members who were previously reported missing or thought to be held hostage. In the video, the seafarers express that Houthi forces “saved” them while they were adrift in the water and have since offered them “good shelter” and are “keeping them safe.” The video also captures the nighttime rescue operation and scenes of the crew in custody.
Seafarers Say They Were Unaware of Houthi Maritime Ban
In the clip, the crew members mention that they had no idea about a maritime ban imposed by the Houthis on sailing to Israeli ports. One sailor is seen making a phone call home, while others share personal statements. Meanwhile, Israeli media have dismissed the footage, labelling it as “propaganda.”
Fate of Missing Crew Raises Concerns
There are fears that four Filipino crew members may have lost their lives in the attack. The fact that only ten men appear in the video raises concerns about the fate of the eleventh crew member that the Houthis claimed to have rescued.
Operation Aspides Confirms Crew Casualties and Missing
According to Operation Aspides, 15 out of the ship’s 25 crew members were initially unaccounted for. Of those, four are now presumed dead. The Houthis reported that they rescued 11 crew members and recovered one body before the vessel sank.
