Houthis Target Israeli-Linked Tanker in Red Sea Missile Strike

11

Tensions in the Red Sea escalated sharply as Yemen’s Houthi movement launched a missile at a Liberian-flagged oil tanker,  which is linked to Israeli interests. The incident took place in the northern Red Sea, an area increasingly volatile due to ongoing regional conflicts and maritime threats, reports Platts.

Missile Misses Target

The missile reportedly landed near the vessel, creating a loud explosion and water splash that was detected by the ship’s crew. No injuries or damage were reported, and the tanker was able to continue its voyage. Despite Houthi claims that the ship was struck, independent assessments indicated the missile missed its target.

The attack follows a recent airstrike that killed the Houthi-appointed prime minister along with other senior members of the group. In response, the Houthis have intensified threats and operations against Israeli-linked shipping as part of a broader campaign they describe as support for Gaza.

Growing Risks to Global Trade

This incident adds to growing concerns over the security of shipping routes in the Red Sea, a vital maritime corridor for global energy and cargo flows. Continued attacks are prompting shipping companies to reroute vessels around southern Africa, increasing journey times and operational costs. Insurance premiums for the region have also risen in response to the heightened risk environment.
