  • The vessel, designed for sustainability, can complete a Far East–West Coast U.S. voyage on pure methanol.
  • COSCO SHIPPING continues its commitment to low-carbon innovation, with extensive research and patent developments in methanol technology.

In a landmark moment for the shipping industry, COSCO SHIPPING successfully named M.V. COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, China’s first 16,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship. This event, held in Yangzhou, highlights the company’s commitment to green and low-carbon strategic industries while celebrating the 9th anniversary of COSCO SHIPPING’s reorganization.

China’s First Methanol Dual-Fuel Container Ship Sets Sail

The launch ceremony was attended by key officials, including Zhu Bixin, President of COSCO SHIPPING, and industry leaders from China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, China Classification Society, and the American Bureau of Shipping.

A Leap Towards Green and Low-Carbon Shipping

With a 366-meter length and a 51-meter beam, the COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU is built for sustainability. Its large methanol storage tank enables a one-way transpacific voyage on pure methanol, significantly cutting emissions.

Powered by an intelligent ship system, it optimizes energy efficiency, fuel consumption, and emission reduction, setting a new industry benchmark for sustainable shipping.

Methanol: The Future of Clean Energy in Shipping

Methanol is at the forefront of green energy due to its low particulate emissions and absence of nitrogen oxides and sulfur.

Compared to other alternative fuels, methanol offers lower maintenance costs, easier storage, and higher safety, making it a practical choice for sustainable maritime transport.

Revolutionizing Shipbuilding with Innovation

The development of COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU involved 163 research projects, over 200 specialized books, and 31 patents related to methanol new energy technology.

Collaborating with CHIMBUSCO Jiangsu, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry created China’s first “Terminal Tanker Methanol Bunkering Design Scheme”, receiving approval from the China Classification Society.

Paving the Way for a Greener Fleet

COSCO SHIPPING Holdings is expanding its clean energy fleet with more methanol-powered ships.

As the company continues introducing new-generation vessels, it remains committed to leading the shipping industry’s transition towards a low-carbon future.
