  • Port of Long Beach achieves record cargo volumes in September, up 11.8% YoY.
  • Consumer confidence, a labor pact, and resilient performance drive this success.
  • Import growth, export stability, and rising empty container movements signify a positive outlook for the upcoming holiday season.

A September to Remember

The Port of Long Beach achieved a milestone with its busiest September to date, defying the challenges of the past year. The surge in cargo can be attributed to increased consumer demand for holiday goods, a newly ratified labor pact, and a strong showcase of the Port’s advantages.

Breaking Records and Boosting Confidence

In September, dockworkers and terminal operators moved an impressive 829,429 TEUs, marking an 11.8% increase compared to the previous year. This achievement not only surpassed the prior record set in September 2020 but also marked the Port’s first year-over-year cargo increase in 14 months.

The Import-Export Balance

While imports rose by 19.3%, exports experienced a slight decline of 10.3%. Simultaneously, empty containers moving through the Port grew by 11.5%. These figures reflect a growing consumer confidence and a positive outlook for the upcoming holiday season.

The Role of Labor and Resilience

The recent labor agreement between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association played a crucial role in boosting confidence and driving cargo volumes. With 5,822,666 TEUs moved in the first nine months of 2023, the Port of Long Beach is showing remarkable resilience, aligning with pre-pandemic levels and assuring reliable and sustainable goods delivery.
