The Microsoft outage, caused by a faulty CrowdStrike software update, has led to widespread disruptions, bringing back the infamous “blue screen of death” (BSOD) for many Windows users. This error screen, indicating system failures, has impacted consumers and businesses globally, including airlines, banks, health care providers, telecoms, retailers, and even billboards in New York City’s Times Square, reports CBS News.

Impact and Cause

The BSOD has been a part of Windows systems for decades, and it is designed to display when the operating system encounters serious issues. The recent outage, attributed to a CrowdStrike antivirus software problem, affected multiple Microsoft 365 apps and services. Despite Microsoft’s statement on X about the recovery of these services, many users reported ongoing BSOD issues.

Fixing the Blue Screen of Death

Microsoft suggested that users restore their Windows 365 Cloud PCs to a state before they update or replace the faulty version. Instructions for restoration were provided, with options to choose various restart points before the update. Users can also run “Windows Update” to ensure they have the latest software fixes.

For persistent BSOD errors, Microsoft recommends the following steps:

  1. Open the Get Help app in Windows.
  2. Type “Troubleshoot BSOD error.”
  3. Follow the guided walkthrough.

Non-Windows device users can use the Blue Screen Troubleshooter via their browser by visiting Contact Microsoft Support and following the “Troubleshoot BSOD error” prompts.

Recovery Process

Microsoft warned that customers might need to reboot their systems up to 15 times for successful restoration. Some users have reported successful recoveries after multiple Virtual Machine restart attempts via the Azure Portal.

The situation underscores the importance of robust cyber security measures and the potential widespread impact of software issues on global digital infrastructure.
