The Hudong‑Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HZS), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has delivered the ninth liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier in 2025 — a clear record-setting achievement for LNG carrier deliveries within China this year. This latest vessel, built for the LNG Transportation Phase III Project involving COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation and PetroChina International, underscores a significant evolution in China’s LNG shipping landscape.
Dubbed “Qingcheng,” this 174,000 m³-capacity carrier marks the number of large LNG carriers delivered under the Phase III Project. Altogether, the nine new deliveries mark the fastest annual pace achieved by HZS in the LNG segment.
“Qingcheng” represents more than just another addition to the fleet. At 295 meters long, 45 meters wide, and 26.25 meters deep, it is classed by both Lloyd’s Register (LR) and China Classification Society (CCS). It features a modern dual-fuel low-speed propulsion system, domestically produced propellers, and an optimized “vessel-engine-propeller” configuration — enabling a 1.25% reduction in main engine power and significant fuel savings.
Moreover, the vessel incorporates advanced environmental control systems. Both main engine and generators are fitted with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) solutions, ensuring compliance with stringent emissions standards in both fuel and gas modes. The ship also offers a reliquefaction capacity of 1.5 tons/hour, providing flexibility and efficiency in managing boil-off gas under variable operational conditions.
Beyond serving as a technical and operational asset, the delivery of “Qingcheng” represents a strategic milestone. The Phase III Project — entirely backed by domestic financing in RMB, and involving shipbuilding, chartering, and financing partners — establishes what may become a replicable model for China’s LNG value chain.
