8

Hycamite TCD Technologies Ltd, MOLEA Ltd., and MOL PLUS Co., Ltd. have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance methane-splitting technology for power generation and propulsion onboard marine vessels. This partnership aims to accelerate maritime decarbonization by utilizing cutting-edge technologies to reduce carbon emissions in the hard-to-abate shipping sector.

Key Highlights

  1. Industrial-Scale Demonstration Plant:
    • Hycamite’s first industrial-scale methane-splitting facility in Kokkola, Finland, is set to begin operations in early 2025.
    • The plant represents a significant milestone in scaling up methane-splitting technology.
  2. Collaborative Development:
    • The MoU outlines collaboration to refine and deploy methane-splitting technology for marine applications.
    • Hycamite has been advancing this technology under a Business Finland-financed program since 2022.
  3. Technology Overview:
    • LNG-fueled ships can use Hycamite’s technology to convert methane into hydrogen during voyages.
    • The process also produces solid carbon as a byproduct, which can be offloaded at the destination port, offering a cleaner energy solution.
  4. Decarbonization Goals:
    • The initiative aims to address emissions from maritime traffic, a key challenge in achieving global sustainability targets.
    • Collaboration with MOLEA and MOL PLUS will leverage global technical expertise to accelerate the innovation and deployment process.

Statements from Leadership

  • Laura Rahikka, CEO, Hycamite:
“We are thrilled to partner with MOLEA and MOL PLUS to innovate in maritime decarbonization. Our technology is designed to address some of the most challenging sectors to decarbonize, and marine traffic is a significant focus area. With the start of our industrial-scale facility, we anticipate rapid progress in understanding the potential of onboard methane-splitting applications.”

This partnership represents a pivotal step in transitioning maritime vessels toward low-carbon operations while addressing environmental sustainability challenges. The collaboration will pave the way for greener shipping practices powered by innovative methane-splitting solutions.
