South Korean logistics company Hyundai Glovis has taken delivery of its first LNG dual-fuel LNG carrier from HD Hyundai Samho’s shipyard in South Korea, reports Engine.

The 174,000-cbm capacity LNG carrier, Woodside Scarlet Ibis, will be able to run on LNG or conventional marine fuels. The vessel is chartered to Australian oil and gas production company Woodside Energy for a period of 10 years. The LNG carrier will make its first call at Woodside Energy’s Pluto LNG terminal in Western Australia.

LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 557 vessels, with another 160 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
