IACS Introduces UR M85 for Propeller Shaft Bearings

108

  • IACS has introduced UR M85, the first technical guideline for type approval testing of synthetic materials used in aftmost propeller shaft bearings.
  • The guideline ensures safety, reliability, and material durability through rigorous testing standards.
  • UR M85 promotes industry-wide consistency, enhancing operational efficiency and maritime safety.

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has released UR M85, establishing comprehensive standards for type approval testing of synthetic materials in aftmost propeller shaft bearings. These guidelines aim to ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency in vessel propulsion systems.

Structured Type Approval Testing

UR M85 mandates a detailed testing program, requiring precise product descriptions, test sample selection, and specific conditions to align with industry standards, ensuring consistent and reliable results.

Materials must meet stringent benchmarks for properties such as tensile strength, elongation, and metal adhesion, ensuring structural integrity and reliable performance under diverse operating conditions.

Accredited Testing Facilities

All tests must be conducted in ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratories to guarantee accuracy and compliance with quality standards, reinforcing IACS’s commitment to reliability.

Wear tests must follow ASTM G77-17 or equivalent standards, with specific parameters for shaft material, lubrication, and test duration to ensure predictable material durability.

Environmental Simulation for Testing

Controlled environmental factors, including temperature, humidity, and substitute ocean water, simulate real-world conditions to verify material resilience and operational reliability.

Upon successful testing and documentation, the Classification Society issues a Type Approval Certificate, confirming product conformity with IACS standards and boosting operator confidence.

UR M85 reflects IACS’s focus on addressing operational challenges and advancing technological solutions to enhance safety and reliability across the maritime sector.
